Kompong Khleang is the one of the largest traditional communities on the Tonle Sap Lake. Located about 50km east of Siem Reap. The village has long history closely connected to fishing and the seasonal cycle of Tonle Sap. Many families have traditionally depended on fishing,fish processing and small scale farming for their livelihood. Like other Tonle Sap communities residents adapted their homes to dramatic seasonal changes. During the wet season the water rises surrounding the village,in the dry season the lake retreats. Many houses are built on very tall stilts,while others part of the community are reached by boat during the high water. The village offers the visitors glimpse into the lifestyle that has developed around one of Southeast Asia’s most important freshwater lakes.
